My last post at Windows Live Spaces..

This blog has moved - if you are reading this post via an rss agrigator please update my entry to feed://philbridges.com/?feed=rss2 (clicking on the link should be enough for most programs). The website URL is http://philbridges.com .

The primary reason for the move was to enable support for embeded video inside a post and give me a wider choice of plugins for things like Flickr which are currently unsupported in Spaces.

Thanks for taking the trouble to read my mumblings over the past year and a bit!

Happy New Year..

Gwn Reedy 'W1BEL' 1942 - 2006

For anyone who knows me from those good old days of Siskin Electronics and AX.25 Packet Radio I'm sorry to report the demise of Gwyn Reedy in an Auto accident last week. His funeral will be on Wednesday December 27th at the Veterans Cemetary in Bushnell, FL with full Military honours as he was also Colonel Gwyn Reedy of US Air Force earlier in his career.

Before becoming President of Paccomm Gwyn did some really pioneering work with the Tuscon Amateur Packet Radio Group really heping to accelerate development in RF data comms. It's hard to believe that just 8 years ago we thought 9600 baud over radio was the dog's nutz, yet today we're looking at a potential for 600Mbs over WiFi 'off the peg' and far greater in various R&D labs around the world.

As Paccomm's largest partner we worked very closely with Gwyn & Linda to the point that we were making so many calls to the US that we used a telephone wormhole in London that gave us a US dial tone & US call rates (if only Skype and SIP had been around!). I had a lot of fun working with Gwyn especially manning the PacComm booths at the Dayton Hamventions and that mother-off-all car trips from Ohio back to Tampa in a Mini-van with Bill Slack NX2P and Tom Moulton W2VY.

It always surprises me that mention of people like Gwyn rarely shows up in the likes of Wikipedia yet he did so much to change the future, perhaps in 5 year's time the hype surrounding WEB 2.0 etc. might suffer a similar fate?...

Portsmouth Hurricane Appeal

A major hurricane (Hurricane Shazza) and earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale hit Portsmouth in the early hours of Friday with its epicentre in Paulsgrove.

Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, muttering "Faaackinell".

The hurricane decimated the area causing approximately £30 worth of damage.

Several priceless collections of mementos from Majorca and the Costa Del Sol were damaged beyond repair.

Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed.

Many locals were woken well before their giros arrived.

Skate FM reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in Paulsgrove.

One resident - Tracy Sharon Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said, "It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Victoria-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was skinning up and watching Trisha the next morning."

Apparently looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried on as normal.

The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Lambrini to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, including benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos and Bone China from Poundland.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

This appeal is to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those unfortunate enough to be caught up in this disaster.

Clothing is most sought after - items most needed include:

Fila or Burberry baseball caps

Kappa tracksuit tops (his and hers)

Shell suits (female)

White sport socks

Rockport boots

Any other items usually sold in Primark.

Food parcels may be harder to come by, but are needed all the same.

Required foodstuffs include:

Microwave meals

Tins of baked beans

Ice cream

Cans of Colt 45 or Special Brew.

22p buys a biro for filling in the compensation forms.

£2 buys chips, crisps and blue fizzy drinks for a family of 9.

£5 buys B&H and a lighter to calm the nerves of those affected.

**Breaking news**

Rescue workers found a girl in the rubble smothered in raspberry alco-pop.

'Where are you bleeding from?' they asked, "Paulsgrove" said the girl, "woss that gotta do wiv you?"

(Apologies in advance to Mr Erskine should he stumble accross this post - init)

Doctor Who to regenerate as "Number 6..."

"The satellite TV channel Sky One has unveiled plans for a new six-part “thrilling reinvention” of The Prisoner, as director of programmes Richard Woolfe describes the project, with Christopher Eccleston proposed for the lead role of Number Six.  Woolfe adds that the mini-series will be a “sophisticated, high-concept drama to rival anything on the terrestrials and the best of the U.S. It's our biggest drama commission ever and every penny will be evident on screen. We want to capture the imagination of a new generation of viewers." source - The Prisoner Offricial Appreciation Society

I'm a Wii...... and I'm a PS3

So now I've got this burning desite to rush out and buy a Nintendo Wii despite reports of folks accidently hurling their Wii controllers at their pets, family members, TV screens and fish tanks.

This Microsoft 'in-house' spoof ad might be what actually tipped me 'over the edge'..

(Oh, and for more of the same but about the Microsoft Zune click here ..... )

PS - does anybody out there in Cyberspace know how to embed flash video into Windows Live Spaces?
